Calvario began as a small Spanish speaking Bible study at Calvary Community Church in June of 1993, with a burden to share the message of God’s grace with the latino community. There was no great strategy behind the church plant but to simply preach Jesus. There was no miraculous and explosive growth, but rather Calvario slowly and steadily add to their numbers, from its three founding members (counting the pastor and his wife!) to approximately 70 attendees over the. next 3 years. It was at this juncture that God moved on the heart of the leadership to become an independent church and rent their own facility. This occurred in June of 1997.
Since then, Calvario has continued grow to their present state with approximately 450 adults attending Sunday mornings.
“Though our numbers have increased, our vision and burden remain the same - to simply preach Jesus and bring the message of grace to the latino community.” Pastor Greg
Calvario became affiliated with the Calvary Chapel movement in 1997. The roots of Calvary Chapel can be found in Costa Mesa, California. A non-denominational Christian church, Calvary Chapel was founded by Pastor Chuck Smith in 1965. It has been estimated that over 8,000 baptisms were performed in a two year period at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in the mid 70’s. During that same period, Pastor Chuck Smith and his church were instrumental in bringing 20,000 conversions to the Christian faith. Chuck Smith has come to be known as a leading figure in what is today called “The Jesus Movement.”
The Bible is the Word of God inspired and without error in Its original manuscripts. It is our only source of authority in matters of faith, conduct and truth.
There is one eternal God, personal and knowable who manifests Himself in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is worthy of our worship, confidence and obedience.
Jesus is the eternal, pre-existent Son of God. He willingly took on the body of a man, was virgin-born, became our sinless substitute, shed His blood on the cross to completely pay for the atonement of our sins. We believe He died, was buried, resurrected in a literal body, ascended into Heaven, and is presently our advocate and only High Priest.
The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict the lost, seal the believer and place him or her in the Body of Christ. The fruit of the Holy Spirit in one's life is love. We believe in the baptism with the Holy Spirit, but we do not believe that any special gift is a necessary evidence of salvation or of being filled with the Spirit.
Every person is born with a sinful nature, is spiritually dead and cannot please God until Christ gives him life. We believe salvation from sin, death, and hell is by God's grace. It must be received by faith apart from any human performance or merit. It is a free gift of God to one who personally places his confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ and His finished work on the Cross. We believe a truly born again person is secure in Christ.
That all believers should assemble in local churches for mutual edification, encouragement, evangelism, service and worship. Within our fellowship, as an act of obedience to the Word of God, we share our love of Christ through participation in the signs of the New Covenant: The Lord's Supper and Baptism by immersion in water.
The Lord Jesus Christ will personally return for His own before the tribulation and before His millennial reign.
Calvario’s vision is simple, it is to see a generation rise up that has a passion for God and for His mission. We desire to see a community of believers who after being transformed by the grace of Jesus Christ, will in turn act as catalysts in effecting transformation in their families, in their communities, and ultimately in the world.
Many people today understand the church as a building. The church is not a building nor a denomination nor an organization. The word translated church in the Bible is the Greek word ekkesia, which literally means “an assembly” or “called-out ones”. The church is a body of believers who gather together for three purposes:
To Exalt Jesus Christthrough our worship and our lives (Rev 7:10-12).
To Edify The Saints by the expository teaching of the Word of God (Eph 4:12).
To Evangelize The Lost by communicating the Gospel message – that Jesus Christ died to save us from our sins and He offers us the free gift of eternal life (Mat 28:19-20).
In our desire to fulfill these purposes, we focus on what were the four priorities of the early church as outlined in Acts 2:42. It reads: “And they devoted themselves…”
“…to the apostles’ teachings…” That is why at all of our services we give the mayor portion of our time to the systematic and expository teaching of the Bible. We believe that the whole Bible is the inspired Word of God, inspired and our only source of authority. That is why we study it book by book, chapter by chapter, verse by verse.
“…and the fellowship…” That is why we provide a wide variety of opportunities for the brethren to get to know one another and to build godly friendships that are essential for our spiritual growth.
“…to the breaking of bread…” The Lord emphasized the importance of commemorating His death through the Lord’s Supper. As a church we observe this ordinance every first Sunday of the month and we invite all who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior to be a part.
“…and the prayers…” Just as prayer was an essential component in the life of our Lord, so to it is in the life of the Christian. We set aside time each week to gather as a congregation and see the will of our Lord through prayer.
